Left in the Dark

It’s time to close our foray into Zweihänder Reforged and The Eternal Night of Lockwood campaign. Our last session will be on 10th September, 19:00 BST. The Thursday Night format is for shorter taster games, so we will be moving on to something else. I must have got a bit carried away.

Here’s a recap as to what I like about the game itself:

  • Warhammer Fantasy evolved, so starting on a great base.
  • High starting Attributes giving many skills a playable start
  • Condensed, broader based skills that all characters can try
  • Threshold based damage tracks for physical and ‘peril’
  • Simpler career structure that still provides for long form play (depending how you give out XP there is about 100 sessions to top out at the advanced tier – up to 200)
  • Simple blackjack for opposed rolls
  • Survivors that have had a brush with death and gained a strength and weakness due to it
  • 3 action point economy
  • Exploding damage die that means even the tank might go down
  • Good flavour on the talents and spells

I’ve talked a bit about our use of Foundry, which has provided a rich environment in which to play. There is enough in there now that I really should re-use it for a subsequent game or more.

Zweihänder Reforged has great potential for a whole raft of grubby fantasy. You could lighten it, accentuate heroic deeds over brush with death, reskin some careers, and have a tonally different game. Warhammer Fantasy will stay my game of choice for The Old World, and I continue to look forward to the imminent 5th edition of the game. I may need to create whole new time zones in my calendar.

It’s great when you meld with a game and really enjoy it.
